«Connection e.V.» is organizing, together with its partner «War Resisters’ International» (WRI), a public event at the United Nations (UN) in Geneva on the occasion of the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council which started on September 8th and will conclude on October 8th.

The right to conscientious objection to military service is a human right inherent in the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, thus it should be universal and non—derogable. Unfortunately, this right is often violated and conscientious objectors are persecuted and some are forced to seek protection abroad. We will present particular aspects of this right and its violations in times of war.

The event will be moderated by «Connection e.V.»’s coordinator of the international advocacy, Zaira Zafarana, who has been organizing the work of this organization at the UN.

Among panellists there are «Connection e.V.»’s legal consultant for Eastern Europe, Artem Klyga and the international human rights lawyer Rachel Brett who is currently the human rights advisor at the «Quaker United Nations Office».

We will also hear the first hand experience of young conscientious objectors from Israel, Ukraine and Russia and a presentation from the lawyer Noa levy who is assisting conscientious objectors in Israel through the organization «Mesarvot».
